We know many of you are flying a long way for one Sunday afternoon, and we'd be happy if you turned it into a real trip. Vista sits in North County San Diego, twenty minutes from the ocean and forty minutes north of the city. Late November is the best time of year here: warm sun, cool nights, no summer crowds.
Rather than list everything, here are the twelve places we actually send people, roughly in order of how far you'll drive. We've mentioned how much walking each one involves, since we know that matters to some of you.
A note on timing: the sun sets around 4:45, so save outdoor plans for the morning. Thanksgiving is that Thursday, so book restaurants and cars early if you're staying on.
Oceanside Pier
15 minutes · Easy walking · No booking
One of the longest wooden piers on the coast. The far end has been closed since a fire a couple of years ago, but you can walk most of it. The harbor a mile north has fish markets and boats.
Balboa Park
One of America's great urban parks and a must-see for first-time San Diego visitors. Home to 17 museums, stunning Spanish Colonial architecture, beautiful gardens, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo — all in one place. You could easily spend a full day here and still not see everything. Best of all, walking the grounds and architecture is completely free.

Lightscape at the San Diego Botanic Garden

A mile-long walk through the gardens after dark, lit up with light installations and music. It opens mid-November and sells out on weekends, so grab tickets as soon as you know your dates.
